It’s well and truly Spring in Brisbane which means that the days are magical and it’s time to put those winter layers away and reassess our style. Spring for me is all about having fun, getting out more, removing those sombre winter layers and embracing, carefree, light and feminine. It’s a great time to experiment with your style, whether it be trying a fun new colour, a quirky print or a fresh look. So, here are my favourite 2020 Spring Fashion Trends to Spice Up Your Wardrobe?
As the seasons change, understanding upcoming trends is a great way to inform any style purchases. As a general rule, I am not a slave to trends. I wear what I love, what flatters me and makes me feel confident. As trends come and go, I embrace those that work for my personal style and completely dismiss those that don’t.
Don’t let fashion own you. Decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.
I like to keep my look current and timeless by wearing trends in small doses. They are really just a twist on a classic piece. This ensures that any clothes, shoes and accessories I invest in will be pieces that I will actually love and wear for a long time.
I’m also all for ‘mindful’ shopping. A little forward planning stops impulse buys and ensures that your wardrobe contains carefully selected items that will become closet staples and all work back with each other. I’ve done the legwork, so here we have it, my favourite 2020 spring/summer fashion trends:
1 | SHOWSTOPPING SLEEVES
If you love to make a statement, voluminous sleeves will be your friend this spring/summer. There’s something very whimsical and optimistic about dramatic sleeves and they seem to be everywhere at the moment.
Take your pick from 80’s structure, to soft Victorian silhouettes or something a little flirty and sheer. The oversized sleeve creates a modern play on proportion that is both flattering and feminine. They create the illusion of a slimmer waist and add an instant feminine touch to your outfit.
HOW TO WEAR: Balance the rest of your look with minimal accessories or try an unexpectedly sporty accent like sneakers.

2 | POLKA DOTS
There are prints that come and go and prints, like the cheerful polka dot, that stand the test of time. I met my Tiger in the early 1990’s and I distinctly remember wearing flowing polka dot pants with a cute tee the night we met. Yes, polka dots obviously worked for me back then, so I see no reason not to embrace them again now.
This season, we’re seeing polka dots come in brighter colours, vintage-inspired silhouettes, and more graphic prints for a totally modern feel. Try this trend at the office or for a springtime party!
HOW TO WEAR: When it comes to picking your polka dots, don’t be afraid to experiment with size and colour or to pair your spots with stripes or florals for a fun print clash.

3 | GRAPHIC PRINTS & COLOUR
An injection of joy came courtesy of playful prints and colour this season. This trend is for those who are unafraid of the bold, but it can also be done with more subtlety.
Anything goes print wise including one of the hottest trends to come out of lockdown – tie dye. Accepting colour into your wardrobe can be a challenge, but nothing feels more uplifting. I’ve spotted pretty shades of rust, purple, green, blue, pink and yellow anywhere and everywhere.
HOW TO WEAR: Co-ordinate colours back with your basics (black, navy, grey, white and so on) or rock colour head to toe for a totally uplifting look. Mix prints and patterns but keep the colour subtle so you don’t overdo it!

4 | COMFORT DRESSING
Many of us have been rocking our loungewear all winter. Don’t worry, we don’t need to give up comfort altogether. Soft shorts or baggy jeans and comfortable sneakers will all be super stylish this spring. And who doesn’t love a simple, white sneaker? I’ve also noticed dressy ‘sweats’ for office and evening wear.
HOW TO WEAR: While baggy pants aren’t always the most flattering silhouette, the style of top can drastically change the overall vibe. If you’re going shapeless with your bottom half, balance your proportions with a fitted top.

5 | RETRO STYLING
This spring one of the hottest trends is to head back in a time. Whether it be 60’s inspired kaleidoscope patterns, 70’s bohemian optimism or living out your 80’s diva dreams with ruffles galore. There’s no denying the fun that comes with wearing one of these throwback confections.
Bohemian style is a trend that I love on others but just don’t feel great in myself. The volume and layers are perfect for that unique, free spirit.
HOW TO WEAR: Give Bohemian style a modern, funky edge with clashing prints and colours, multi-layered textures and modern detailing. If you’re going for a more dramatic retro statement keep your accessories simple.

OTHER TRENDS I’M LIKING
MATCHING SETS
Matching sets are a sure thing this spring and investing in a set is a can be a great investment.
HOW TO WEAR: Worn together matching sets make for a polished look. You’ll also get extra mileage out of these pieces by breaking them up and styling them back with your wardrobe.
TEXTURE
Spring 2020 fashion has a focus on the use of texture and natural fibres in our clothing. Texture has the ability to elevate and add interest to the most basic of pieces. Natural fibres are perfect to keep you cool in our spring/summer weather.
HOW TO WEAR: Contrast jersey, leather, satin, cutwork broderies, fringing, crochet and sheer mesh all to add a playful vibe to your wardrobe.
SMALL FLORAL PRINTS
Florals in spring are slightly cliche but this year’s iteration sees the adored print turn micro. Small floral motifs are super feminine add a timeless cut and you have the perfect spring part dress.
HOW TO WEAR: Clean and versatile accessories keep this look feeling modern and wearable.
Fundamental to all of this is – wear what works for you! Invest in key pieces that will stand the test of time and add little splashes of trends in a colour, sleeve or texture to make your clothes feel current. I’d love to hear what 2020 spring fashion trends your loving.
