Today kicks off ‘Be Cruelty Free’ week, which is a global campaign aiming to end animal testing for all cosmetics. I’m a huge animal lover and feel really passionate about this issue that is the ugly side of the beauty industry. Surely, we can look our best without harming other living creatures in the process.
Months ago, I set myself the challenge to slowly replace all of my makeup, skincare and haircare with cruelty free beauty products. A simple task you would think – umm, no. Friends may have noticed that I have rotated between foundations that were too thick, too shiny or cakey or had no staying power as I trialled one after another. We all have unique and specific requirements when it comes to selecting a foundation and if you’ve been using one for years, it can be tricky to find a substitute that measures up.
I have achieved my goal now! Other than the odd product that I’m still finishing up, I am a cruelty free zone – and it feels great.
Your beliefs don’t make you a better person – your actions do.
RAGEISM CRUELTY FREE BEAUTY
In my search for a cruelty free foundation, I recently stumbled upon a new makeup brand specifically formulated for mature skin – RAGEISM. This makeup range was developed by two Australian women who wanted to shake up the status quo and develop a sustainable makeup range specifically for women over 40. I love the ethical philosophies behind this brand and their commitment to the environment. I also applaud their celebration of true beauty at any age. As well as being the only brand created specifically to enhance mature skin, the products are:
- NOT tested on animals
- Made and manufactured in Australia
- Vegan friendly
- Packaged in gorgeous recyclable containers inside a re-useable washable cosmetic bag
- Free of artificial colours and fragrances
- Free of chemicals such as parabens, talc, lead, mineral oils, alcohol, chemical dyes and synthetic binders
They have a clear Glossary of Ingredients on their website and it’s great that so many of the ingredients are natural plant extracts or oils.
RAGEISM ALL DAY FOUNDATION REVIEW
So, after all those trials, hunting for the ‘perfect’ cruelty free foundation, I thought I’d put the RAGEISM formula to the test and it is fast becoming one of my favourites. I like my foundation to be hydrating, to provide good coverage and to look – well, like skin – not cakey, not matt and not overly shiny. Like I’m not wearing makeup at all. And no one wants foundation that settles in lines. We want it to enhance our natural features – not highlight imperfections.
RAGEISM All Day Foundation ($65 for 30ml) and Illuminating Primer ($65 for 30ml) were developed to give a natural, dewy finish. They contain moisturisers to hydrate and enrich your skin and light reflecting particles to give you a natural glow. This is a beautiful combination for dry, mature skin!
I love the primer. It is light and silky smooth. It hydrates my skin and provides a perfect base for the foundation.
The mineral foundation (I’m wearing 02) and primer are stunning together and make my skin appear smooth and flawless (which it isn’t). I don’t like too much ‘glow’ in my foundation (I prefer to add the glow exactly where I want it). This foundation seems to get this just right. It evens out my skin tone and appears very natural.
I did think the colour (02) would be too dark for my skin but it seems to blend well and compliment the rest of my body post summer. I would perhaps go a shade lighter in winter. The colour palette is limited at this point compared to other brands on the market, so an exact colour match may be an issue for some people.
The concealer ($40) is light but provides good coverage for my dark circles and other imperfections. I found it didn’t highlight or settle in fine lines under my eyes at the end of the day, when compared with my usual concealer.
I believe that all women are pretty without makeup – but the right makeup can be pretty powerful.
I have been trialling these products over the last two weeks or so and they have been given a great test with the stifling humidity in Brisbane at the moment. The foundation really does last all day, even if I’m rushing to school pick-up in the heat and sweating profusely. A big thumbs up there. I didn’t find this foundation completely transfer proof though ie. if you are constantly touching your face or changing clothes, you will eventually rub some of it off.
Although RAGEISM recommends applying the foundation with a brush, I didn’t have one. I applied the foundation and concealer with a damp beauty blender as per my usual routine and it left me with dewy, even skin that looked seamless and natural. A little of my favourite powder was applied to set the foundation for the humid day ahead. I would class this as a medium coverage foundation, but it is buildable if you prefer a heavier coverage.
One thing I’ve found over the last 6 months, is that makeup is very personal. We are all so unique in terms our skins requirements and the look we like to create. Although I’ve found this product wonderful for my skin it might not be right for you – one person’s holy grail may be another’s complete fail.
The best thing about this product – RAGEISM offer a full refund or exchange if you’re not 100% satisfied within 14 days of your order. And, if you find the shade you ordered is not right for your skin, they will simply exchange it for you.
To celebrate Be Cruelty Free week, RAGEISM are offering TEA WITH A TIGRESS readers a 20% discount on their starter kit for the month of March. The starter kit includes the primer, foundation and concealer. To receive your 20% discount simply enter the code Be Cruelty Free at the RAGEISM checkout.
The RAGEISM goodness doesn’t end at their primer, foundation and concealer. They have an entire range of make-up products and applicators.
I’ve never used cream eyeshadows before, but the RAGEISM eyeshadows are just sublime. Although well pigmented they seem to melt into your skin, giving a very luminous, natural look that lasts all day without creasing. Best of all, it is so easy to apply and there is no powder fall-out beneath your eyes. My other favourite product (so far) – the creamy lipsticks with jojoba and coconut oil. More on these products soon!
Another product that stood out during my cruelty free foundation search was Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation ($58 for 30ml). I found these foundations very similar. The Smashbox for me was less hydrating and slightly more matt in finish when the heat is on.
So, let’s see if we can all shake up our beauty cabinets. If you wear foundation and cosmetics, find products that work for your budget and lifestyle and make you feel radiant but please, make it a priority to ‘Be Cruelty Free’. Together we can make the world a better place for all creatures.
This post was not produced in partnership with any brand. The items trialled from RAGEISM were gifted to me and I will be repurchasing. As always, all opinions are my own and I only share items I believe in with my readers. Thank you for supporting TEA WITH A TIGRESS!
