We all need a gentle nudge from time to time, to remind us to get the most out of life. It takes effort to stay present, to ensure you make the most of every day and that you aren’t stuck on auto pilot. Keep reading for 11 simple ideas to spice up your life this February.
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
For so many of us February arrives with apprehension. In Australia it signals the end of summer. Children return to school, holidays become a distant memory, New Year’s resolutions lapse, and we are entrenched in the daily grind with no sign of our next adventure in sight – and then there’s Valentine’s Day. If you don’t feel you’re in a happy relationship Valentine’s Day can heighten feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The magic of love comes in many forms though, so no matter what your situation, let’s celebrate those we care about and how lucky we are to be alive. Celebrate at a movie with your bestie, sharing a home cooked meal with loved ones or relaxing on the couch with your dearest furry companion. I’ve got 11 ideas to help your love shine this February. From books to picnics to cocktails, there’s sure to be something that will get you excited.
1 Self Love
Treat yourself to a manicure (including your favourite polish) each week in February. This little addition to your self care routine will have your hands looking polished and you feeling so put together. You can do it yourself or make it your special splurge and go see a professional.
Look after yourself first, because only then can you attempt to take on the rest of the world.
2 Weeknight Highlight
Break up a mundane week by doing something out of the ordinary. Take your family dinner alfresco – picnic style. Pack your gourmet hamper or simply grab takeaway from your favourite fast food outlet on the way. This is all about sharing outdoor time with people you love. We head to Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane with its spacious well-lit lawns beside a lake and waterfall. Finish your night with a game that will get everyone involved (Finska is our favourite).
3 Celebrate Sustainably
You can avoid the commercialism of Valentine’s Day and celebrate sustainably. Try showing your gratitude to someone you love with a handwritten note or baking some heart shaped cookies. Give them to your mother, your daughter, your lover, your teacher …. Pop your surprise in a lunch box, the mail or under a pillow.
4 Sex Appeal
Add some sex appeal to your bedroom with some eclectic furniture pieces. This beautiful suite at Ebony Lodge, South Africa comes alive with simple luxe bedding, beautiful lighting and unique furniture. The Tea With A Tigress Summer Shop will add personality to your bedroom in no time. You’ll feel like you’re living in a resort all year round.
5 Plan Your Next Adventure
There is no time like February to plan something wonderful to look forward too. Whether it’s a girl’s weekend away, a romantic getaway for two or a camping trip with the family, anticipating something exciting means that you get to enjoy the experience longer. Once you’ve got something ‘big’ to look forward too, try and incorporate small pleasures into every week to make every single day shine.
One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.
6 Read A Great Book
Give yourself some me-time with a great book. I’ve gone against the theme of ‘love’ this month and have just finished reading ‘What Alice Forgot’ by Australian Author Liane Moriarty. (I know, I’m a little late to the party on this one.) This bittersweet tale explores the sad erosion of a once radiant love with wit and sensitivity. Definitely worthy of some high quality me-time.
7 Love On A Plate
Surprise your soulmate with a home cooked meal. Nothing beats the gift of time. When you go to the effort of preparing something special for your loved one it makes them feel valued and treasured. One of my families favourite dishes is Chicken Schwarma. This is a knockout recipe from MKR of tasty marinated chicken, crunchy salad, hummos, yoghurt and warm homemade wraps. You can find the recipe here.
8 Can’t Cook?
I’ve got you covered. Forget the home cooked meal. Treat your special someone to a killer cocktail instead. Order a simple take away and it will feel all the more special because of the effort you make with a stunning cocktail upfront. Don’t forget to set the scene and finish the night with some chocolate dipped strawberries.
Take time out for someone you care about. Go for a walk and hold hands, meet an old friend for coffee or give a loved one a massage … simply put some time aside to do something together and reconnect.
10 Bust Out Some Tunes
Play an album from your favourite sultry singer. A few soul numbers from Marvin Gaye are guaranteed to get the heart racing. Add some candles, some body oil … and you’ll be ‘getting it on’ in no time.
11 Enneagram Test
Complete the Enneagram Personality Test with your loved one. It takes about 5 minutes. Once complete, read about each other’s personality type for a better understanding of what drives each other. What have you got to loose? Could you be a Giver, a Peacemaker or an Idealist?
Love your life. Take pictures of everything you do. Tell people you love them. Talk to random strangers. Do things that you’re scared to do. Take your life and make it the best story in the world.
So, let’s get the most out of life and love this February. Try and incorporate one small pleasure that makes you happy into every day. It could be your daily exercise class, coffee with a friend or quiet time with your partner after the children go to bed. I’d love to hear what you do to make your February shine.
